A ROYGBIV of cocktails
We want you to drink all of the colors of the rainbow – or the Pride flag – in honor of this year’s festivities. And because we love you, we put together this Roy G. Biv drink guide telling you where to find the colorful, prideful drinks in Durango for ease of access. Make sure you drop a few by the DGO Pride tent, won’t ya?
RedNegroni #2, El Moro, $9Red is a powerful color. Lust, rage, danger, and other passionate feelings come to mind when we see it, so don’t get too outta hand when drinking El Moro’s ruby red take on a classic amber negroni. The drink is made with Bombay Original London Dry Gin, Martini and Rossi Rosso vermouth, Campari, and Aperol (which makes it red), over ice with an orange slice.
OrangeDawn Drophead, 11th Street, $9Orange is the color of a dog day sunset, the Broncos, and Prince Harry’s head. It’s also the color of Dawn Drophead, an on-tap cocktail that is a White Manhattan of sorts, made with Fireside bourbon, Alpine liqueur, pineapple rum, Carpano Bianco vermouth, and orange bitters, served in a coupe glass.
YellowRiverside Kolsch, Animas Brewing Co., $4.50OK, beer is not a cocktail, but it’s outside the door chanting, “We’re here! We’re beer! Get used to it!” It fought for the right to be included in this list, and we profoundly admire that. We also admire the color of beer – yellow. The crushable Riverside Kolsch from Animas Brewing Co. is as golden as summertime. And it’s delicious!
GreenMargarita, Nayarit, $7.50We love green in our wallets AND in a fat joint. We also love it in margaritas – the reigning champ of green drinks until the end of time. While watermelon and jalapeño additions are delish, it’s hard to beat a classic marg. Nayarit makes them right with Blue Sauza tequila, fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, with Triple Sec and another orange liqueur.
BlueBlue Fucker, Roadhouse, $3I’m blue da ba dee da ba di. Blue flavor has a questionable reputation. (Who else is still pissed at Jolly Rancher for replacing lemon with sugary blue raspberry?) The Blue Fucker is also questionable. We have no idea what it’s made of. The mystery ingredients are anchored by schnapps, Red Bull, and what we’re guessing is blue glow stick.
IndigoThe Erring Sister, Durango Craft Spirits, $10This stunning color is extremely rare in nature. The richest indigo dye comes from the leaves of Indigofera tinctoria. In the past, it was so desirable this blue gold was used as currency. Now most indigo dye is synthetic, and color specialists don’t include it in their rainbows because they think it’s between blue and violet. We think that’s trash. Indigo is beautiful and it is its own color. Enjoy this rarity, made with house-made basil simple syrup, lemon, blueberry-infused Sold Doves vodka, a splash of soda, and lemon garnish.
VioletFantasia, Bookcase and Barber, $13The original Bookcase and Barber cocktail Fantasia is named after magical land in “The NeverEnding Story.” We are still dealing with PTSD after Atrax died in the Swamp of Sadness, and this drink is a trigger, but it also helps us forget. Made with Empress gin, Combier Creme de Pamplemousse Rose liqueur, Bols Elderflower, Trakal (a Patagonian spirit), Timberline tonic, house lavender bitters, and Luster Dust edible glitter, over a large rock. The cocktail is elegant, sparkly, refreshing, and depressing. FIGHT AGAINST THE SADNESS!
