Edibles: Porch-drinkin’ with Keef Life cannabis-infused beverages

Who says smoking or eating your weed is the best way to go about consuming it? This year, cannabis companies like Oh Hi and Ceria Brewing have challenged that idea by introducing their own THC-infused drinks – sparkling seltzer and beer, respectively.

Most recently, our friends at Keef, a cannabis company based in Boulder, hooked us up with their line of Keef Life drinks to pick up at Durango Organics.

These refreshing beverages are “designed for the health-conscious consumer,” according to the Keef website. “Keef Life has less than 50 calories in the bottle, under five calories per serving. The built-in, re-sealable, child-resistant dosing cap allows customers to add Keef Life to their favorite (non-alcoholic) beverage as an enhancement, or enjoy it on its own as a stand-alone beverage.”

Keef Life comes in four flavors: blueberry-lemon (indica), sour cherry (THC:1/CBD:1), cranberry lime (sativa), and strawberry kiwi (hybrid). They’re non-carbonated fruity juices made of CO2-extracted cannabis oil, reverse osmosis water, agave, monk fruit, and other natural flavors to give you that refreshing effect.

Each can comes in a 12-fluid-ounce bottle with a cap that you can use to measure out 10 mg of THC, a nifty tool seeing as each bottle comes with 10 servings. The best part is when you use the lids to measure out your servings, you can pretend to take a shot. Look, we’re all adults here. Don’t act like you didn’t think of it, too.

Let’s break down the individual flavors, shall we?

Blueberry-Lemon: This indica-infused beverage was the first of the drinks we tried. We were instantly struck by how aromatic it smelled and discovered that each of the flavors were noticeable. We thought this one smelled of blueberry pie with a hint of lemon. In less fanciful terms, like two delicious pies that were mushed together to create a super pie. (If that’s not stoner talk, we don’t know what is.) After we tossed some back, we were pleased to find it went down smoothly and with no weedy aftertaste. This, as we’ve complained about before, is where some companies go wrong, in our humble opinion, though some people prefer that flavor. We wish we could go more into the after-effects of this one, but almost as soon as we began to feel its effects, we were hit with the world’s strongest desire to take a nap, as indicas are wont to do. And who’s going to say no to a nap?

Sour Cherry: One of the things we really enjoyed about Keef Life is that while each flavor has a distinct smell, the taste was never overpowering. This 50/50mg of THC vs CBD instantly brought us back to childhood. Oh, the simple days where it was perfectly acceptable to do nothing for hours other than enjoy a cherry lollipop. We were a little nervous to try this one, as the cherry smell was quite powerful. However, this beverage ended up being one of our favorites. It was a delightful cherry-flavored juice and we could have easily drunk an entire bottle (not that we would ever do that. . .). There wasn’t much in the way of a sour aftertaste, but we decided the cherry flavor was bold enough to stand on its own.

Cranberry-Lime: Out of all the flavor combos, we were most intrigued by this one as, in our opinion, it was the most unusual of the quad. It smelled a bit like medicine, but not the terrible kind you had growing up. More like the dreaded liquid that ended up being quite delicious as the pharmaceutical company buried any bitter taste with a blast of fruity flavor. We’re always a little iffy when it comes to lime flavoring, but in this case, it added just enough of a sour taste to the beverage. As Cranberry-Lime is a sativa, this drink is a great energy boost and, if you’re careful about your intake, it doesn’t give you much fog brain. Suddenly, things like scrubbing your toilet and dusting behind your TV seem like a really great idea and you can’t help but feel like you’re on top of the world as you clean your commode.

Strawberry-Kiwi: Out of the four Keef Life drinks, Strawberry-Kiwi comes out on top as far as summer flavors go. We sipped this one out on the porch because, well, strawberry drinks in the summer don’t belong anywhere else. This flavor was mostly made up of sweet, sweet strawberries. The strawberry was the more dominant of the two flavors, but there was just enough of a kiwi kick to give the drink some depth. It was about as refreshing as drinking a beer on the porch at the end of the day, except this time it was a smooth, fruity juice that you could expect to give you a good buzz within a few hours. Strawberry-Kiwi is a hybrid which, for us, could go a lot of different ways.
