This is by all means, not a definitive list. Just a few favorites from Jon Lynch and Caitlin Cannon:
Lynch’s recsOld 97’s
Lynch says: “‘Wreck Your Life’ … to me, it could be a desert island record.”
Drag the River
Lynch says: “They’re a Fort Collins band. The record, ‘It’s Crazy,’ that record is [deep, satisfied sigh], and their “Live at the Starlight,” is much the same.”
Also among Jon Lynch’s must-listens:Slobberbone
Uncle Tupelo’s “No Depression” and “Anodyne”
Son Volt’s “Trace”
Drive-by Truckers’ “Decoration Day”
Cannon’s recsWhiskeytown’s “Pneumonia”
DBT’s “Southern Rock Opera”
Ryan Adams’ “Heartbreaker” and “Gold”
Local alt-country bands
Farmington Hill: Especially their first album, “Bridge to Nowhere.”
Cannon says: “I think Farmington Hill is one of the last alternative country bands. They totally encapsulate that sound.”
Lawn Chair Kings: Another band with Erik Nordstrom’s at the center
Cannon says: “They’re like a cross between Wilco and bluegrass, and I don’t know what that is – but good.”
The Crags: Mostly garage and surf, they incorporate elements of alt country.
Greg Oldson and the Brown Brothers Band
Lynch says: “I don’t believe any of the members are still in Durango, but, they made two albums of what I think are almost perfect Americana or alternative country records.”
