Strain of the week: Deadhead OG

by Patrick Dalton

What is it?

This beautiful 60/40 sativa-leaning hybrid wasn’t cooked up by Jerry Garcia, but the Deadhead and the OG (Ocean Grown) monikers tell you it’s a California dreamer. Bred by Cali Connection in 2011, she’s the daughter of a Chemdawg 91 mom and an SFV (San Fernando Valley) OG Kush F-4 daddy.

The effects

Like most hybrids, it immediately hits your mind with focus, introspection and a very clear thought stream. It increased in strength at about 20 minutes, causing my body to almost disappear. Even though she leans sativa, I was able to fall asleep easily with comfortable, dreamlike visions that felt almost like hallucinations.

The smell

Imagine yourself in a forest just after it rains, and you’ll understand the pleasantly pungent, earthy, almost wood smell.

The look

Mine was cured properly and looks darker and tighter than most buds produced commercially.

The taste

Nothing special, but nice and smooth with a slight pine taste on the exhale.

The final verdict

The hybrid nature of Deadhead OG gives you the effects of both sativa and indica strains. Even though she doesn’t give you the absolute best of each, you still feel the goodness of each at the same time, a balance that makes it great. I really liked this strain because she’s good for a relaxing hike, a conversation with friends or just about any activity day or night with no lethargy to slow you down. Deadhead OG is very good for pain and anxiety, but I like it for solving mankind’s philosophical issues while enjoying full body levitation.
