Jennylee, “Right On!”
Available: Dec. 11
Label: Rough Trade Records
I love records released with what seem like seasonal appropriation. Like many music fans, I have albums that I refer to or associate as “winter records,” whether intentionally or not. “Right On!” is now among those ranks. Jenny Lee Lindberg is the bass player and backup vocalist for indie rock four-piece Warpaint out of Los Angeles. Here she is (mostly … more on that later) on her own and has made a beautifully bleak record that fits warmly in the noticeably vacant, ho-hum void of winter record releases. Lindberg has made a solo record, her first, to make her Warpaint bandmates proud. This is no small feat considering the critical acclaim the band has had bestowed upon them with each subsequent release.
Jennylee, with help from Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, Dan Elkan (Broken Bells, Hella, etc.) and Norm Block (Mark Lanegan, The Gutter Twins, etc.) have crafted an album swirling with elements of new wave, goth and post-punk filtered through downtempo art rock. The album feels immediate and personal, with darker tones that welcome both repeated listens and close attention to lyrical detail.
Recommended if you like Joy Division, Warpaint, Glasser, xx, Lydia Lunch or Siouxsie and the Banshees.
