The Doomsday Clock is a guestimate of when humankind will create a global catastrophe through global nuclear war. It’s calculated by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. Currently, due to President Trump’s tweets and chatter on North Korea, Russia, and increasing America’s nuclear arsenal, the clock reads two-and-a-half minutes to midnight, the closest it has been to international devastation since the early 1980s.
If you don’t know shit about why that’s scary, it’s time to head down to the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History in Albuquerque. You can easily spend hours at the history hotspot for $12. The museum explores the positive and negative magnitude of nuclear power with a focus on the atomic era and the Manhattan Project. There are exhibits featuring artifacts, interactive experiences, hands-on models, and even a five-acre Heritage Park with military aircraft, decommissioned rockets, missiles, and more. Be prepared to think about the moral quandaries of nukes, what we do with nuclear waste, and how atomic energy has affected popular culture.
