Album review: Blush, “Blush”

by Jon E. Lynch

Blush, “Blush”

Available: Now, digitally, directly from the artist’s Bandcamp page in both FLAC and MP3 downloadable formats. You can also pre-order the physical version on the perfectly fitting colorway, a pale pink vinyl LP, via Athens, Georgia-based Arrowhawk Records or the Bandcamp page. The first run of the vinyl version will be limited to 500 and should ship by late February or, according to the label website, “as soon as we get them back from the pressing plant.”

Blush is the dizzyingly saccharine self-titled album by Maura M. Lynch (no relation) breathed to life by a talented crew of fellow New York-based musicians, all with their own respective bands and projects. Lynch (keys, guitar, vocals), formerly of Darlings and Beverly, is joined on the record by Andy Chugg (bass, drums) of Pop. 1280 along with Jon Campolo (drums, keys, vocals) and Nick Campolo (guitar, keys, vocals) of Pill.

I was admittedly, initially, drawn to listen to the record with piqued curiosity as a fan of Sacred Bones recording artist Pop. 1280. It was the strength and tone of the album that garnered repeat listens. The album feels deeply personal, like we’re being allowed a secret peek, led to peer into Lynch’s private journal home recordings. Don’t confuse the sonic choice and feel as lazy, slacker, bedroom lo-fi. It all fits so well within the context and season. If we ever again get snow in this part of the country, and we will, this will be a welcome companion album to traipse around to in a snowy winter morning haze. Standout tracks include “You Win” and the hummed in lieu of lyric’d “Fire Island.”

Recommended for fans of Your Friend, Chastity Belt, Dum Dum Girls, Frankie Rose, Japanese Breakfast, Real Estate, or Jay Som.
