Get your extraterrestrial thrills at Roswell’s UFO Festival

by Amanda Push

If you haven’t noticed yet, we here at DGO Mag loooooove us some UFOs and aliens. So, naturally, when we saw that New Mexico’s very own Roswell – the self-proclaimed UFO capital of the world – was hosting its annual UFO Festival, we were thrilled. We will, of course, will be in attendance.

From July 5-7, an estimated amount of 20,000 human UFO nerds will descend upon the small town to celebrate the infamous crash that allegedly occurred more than 70 years ago, and helped launch the interest in what became an international sensation.

Even if the possibility of life on other planets doesn’t interest you, there’s plenty to get excited about when it comes to the UFO Festival. There’s the 24th Annual Alien Chase for all you runners out there. There’s the 44th Army Band free concert, and there is the Alien Costume Contest, which sounds like a much cooler version of a beauty pageant.

“This isn’t only a costume contest,” the websites states. “It is a full-out stage performance. Because it’s more than just posing on stage: it’s about portraying characters too, a show full of spectacle, beauty, awe, comedy. We want you to have fun with it. Woo the crowd and the judges and you have a better chance of winning!”

What’s better than a human Alien Costume Contest, you ask? Well, it just might be the Alien Pet Contest. All those adorable pets dressed in their ET best? We’re here for it.

Aside from all that funnery, which we’ve coined as a new word, there are Fourth of July events, a car show, a song contest, and even a light festival.

There will be plenty of activities, vendors, and food trucks to choose from, but the event speakers may be this festival’s greatest treasure trove.

Among them will be Mike Bara, the lecturer, TV personality, and New York Times bestselling author of “Dark Mission – The Secret History of NASA;” Donald Burleson, a professional mathematician and New Mexico State Director of MUFON, the Mutual UFO Network; Thomas Cary, an Air Force veteran and MUFON State Section Director for Southeastern Pennsylvania; Paul Davids, a writer and executive producer for Showtime’s “Roswell;” Haktan Akdogan, the founder and chairman of Sirius UFO Space Sciences Research Center; and many, many more speakers to choose from.

Basically, skipping out on this festival won’t do you any favors when the alien overlords inevitably invade our planet and hopefully fix things like global warming and warfare. Perhaps they’ll be cool and take some of us with them when they’re done. But in the meantime, we feel that it’s in everyone’s best interest to learn more about what could be out there and celebrate the impending takeover.

Please, come in peace.
