Party in the Park: The Motet is bringing funk and soul to Durango

by Amanda Push

It’s time to get funky, folks, and who else to help us get down than The Motet.

The soul and funk band is bringing their Speed of Light Tour to Durango Aug. 17 for KSUT Public Radio’s 16th annual Party in the Park – Buckley Park, to be exact. This seven-man band hails from Denver and, well guys, these righteous dudes have been entertaining people with their music since 1998.

“We’ve never been a band that just blew up overnight,” Dave Watts, the drummer, was quoted as saying on the band’s website. “We’ve been very tenacious about our movement forward. We’ve been through many different iterations throughout the years. Right now, it feels like we’ve got the lineup that’s making an impression on our scene. Lyle is the perfect match for us. He’s got musicality and this raw energy we all resonate with. He ignited this spark to put work in and write inspiring music.”

Local afrobeat/Latin jazz/funk/rock band, The Afrobeatniks, out of Mancos, will open for The Motet.

Tickets are going for $22 for general admission. For more information and tickets, visit events.org.
