Strain review: Horsetooth

by DGO Pufnstuf

Do you children of the ’80s and ’90s remember when Crayola was hell-bent on making scented crayons happen? They were called Magic Scent, and all the cool kids had them (well, most of them, anyway). There was a grape-scented crayon, and licorice (hurk), and even dirt and pine-scented crayons. They came in boxes of 8 or 16, and the crayon company released special United Kingdom, Germany, and Canadian editions. They were legit all the rage.

I can still smell the sharpness of the leather jacket crayon (why would they do that to the poor black crayon?!) and remember thinking that laundry-scented fresh air crayon was the best. Smoke and dirt were tied for the worst, but the smelly crayons – all of them – were nothing if not innovative for the time.

I know that Crayola’s creative department has moved well past Magic Scents these days, but if they ever decide to release a weed-scented crayon (for adults, obviously), they should use this week’s strain – Horsetooth – as inspiration. And I would like to take credit for this idea.

No, seriously. Horsetooth, a cross between Fort Collins Cough #1 x Platinum Tesla, would be the perfect muse for a cannabis-scented coloring stick. The first thing I noticed when I popped open the lid of this sativa-leaning hybrid strain was how pleasant the scent was. I’m sure you’re well aware that some of the best strains can smell the very worst (everyone’s looking at you, East Coast Sour Diesel), but this strain smells like summer. I love it. It reminded me of the scent of freshly mowed grass, all warm and clean. I was told it smelled a bit like cheese. It does not. It smells delicious, which makes sense when you consider its origins. Fort Collins Cough is one of those strains that smells like incense, and Platinum Tesla has an earthy, herbal scent, so the combination was bound to be a good one.

But it doesn’t only smell delicious. It also tastes delicious. I’ll always have a soft spot for strains that don’t taste like the end of a charred pencil – you guys know what I’m talking about – and Horse Tooth is one of those strains. The smoke it emits is strong and a bit hazy, but it isn’t off-putting. It’s just… smoke. One should expect it to taste as such.

What I didn’t expect, though, was how much of a head high Horsetooth would leave me with. I generally expect sativa-leaning hybrids to leave me awake and clearheaded, and while this strain did indeed wake me up (I binge-watched a couple hours of “The Office;” everyone should have a love like Pam and Jim), I was definitely feeling the strain more in my head than anything. I half-expected a serious body high to follow, but it didn’t. Twas just my head.

But, you know, that’s not a bad thing. It was just a surprise. Sometimes it’s good to get out of your own head and into the clouds above. It’s what attracted me to cannabis back as a youngster. As a chronic over-thinker, it was a relief to just sit back and be myself without the Eeyore rain cloud of responsibilities looming overhead. And that’s exactly what this strain did for me.

Life can be stressful. It’s good to have a strain that will, with just a few tokes, take you to your happy place. And that’s precisely what Horsetooth will do. So if you’re going to make a weed-scented crayon, or perhaps just smoke some really pleasant weed, you might consider this here strain. Tis good stuff indeed.
