Street style: embracing opposites

by DGO Web Administrator

After finding love online, Pam Fortune moved to Colorado from her home near the banks of the Amazon River in Amazonas, Brazil to marry her husband. She has been living in Durango for just over a year, but she’s still adjusting from the tropical city life to Durango’s outdoorsy mountain lifestyle. Fortune is inspired by rock ’n’ roll, blues, psych rock, and other music, but growing up in a conservative household kept her from dressing too wildly, leading to her creating a classic look that discreetly nods to her rebellious side.

“[My home town] is a big city. We have conservative people who judge you by your style a little bit. I’m 50 percent inspired by music and 50 percent inspired by formal, conventional, classic [looks].

I try to find the balance. I like the delicate, romantic style because the rock ’n’ roll brings an intense energy that is too aggressive. If you balance that with the feminine, it creates a cool image.

I am adjusting my style here because Durango is very free and open-minded, and here you have more freedom to dress with colors without people judging.

The funny thing is, when I was a teenager, I had the dream to be punk or gothic, but I couldn’t do this because my family was very religious and traditional. They think that [style] expresses evil and is satanic, so I had to be discrete. I had to wear the black in a classic way, but when I grew up, I started to dress with more color.”
