The wisdom of Willie Nelson

by Keena Kimmel

Willie Nelson’s third book, “The Tao of Willie: A Guide to Happiness in Your Heart,” is like Nelson himself: A treasure. A modest little tome, it’s best absorbed in bits as a tattered tapestry of lessons learned, bottomless jokes, and sage advice.

Nelson’s been on the road for over six decades, is on his fourth wife, and the guy has a stories to tell. Far from being jaded in his golden years, Nelson has mellowed like a fine wine. He makes fast friends from all walks of life and seems to bring out the good in people.

Nelson’s an easy-paced wearer of many hats, including: musician, author, poet, actor, activist, and former Bible salesman. As is his way, Nelson makes life sound so simple. “I just enjoy both working and not working and fortunately, I work enough where I get that out of my system, and then we take a few days off, take a rest,” he writes.

Loosely based on the Tao Te Ching, “The Tao of Willie” is the perfect companion for backpacking, road trips, or a morning cuppa in the sunshine. If you enjoy quick reads chock full of joie de vivre, this is a must read.
