I took a friend (who’s just an occasional smoker) with me to pick up Race Fuel OG, this week’s strain. One of my favorite things to do is smell the bud fresh out of its container, so once we got back to the car, I popped off the lid and stuck it under her nose.
“Smell this,” I said.
She replied by making a face and muttering something like, “Oh, dear God.” I could tell by her face that there was a strong scent to this strain, which to me smelled like spicy, orange jet fuel.
A hybrid cross between High Octane OG x Face Off OG, this strain is a bit of a celebrity in the cannabis world. It was used in Colorado’s “The Grow-Off,” which pitted pot shops across the state against each other in a contest to see who could best cultivate the mystery strain (which they found out later was Race Fuel OG). In fact, that’s how Prohibition ended up with it. They grew it for the competition and ended up keeping it on rotation.
A peek inside the canister showed that these buds are pretty dense and large, and a much lighter green than I expected (given the smell). The smell is not the only thing that’s strong about Race Fuel OG, either. The strain can come bearing upwards of 25 percent THC, which is insane, and the effects (for me) leaned more toward an indica than a sativa, although I didn’t realize it at first.
What I mean by that is I found Race Fuel OG to be a tricky illusionist. The strain may be heavy on the indica properties, but at first, the effects felt more like a sativa, with a quick head high and a serious case of the giggles. I figured the feelings of euphoria and the wicked head rush were ultimately what would stick around. That was not the case.
This strain is kind of like a dorky street magician – the one you greatly underestimate until he disappears in a cloud of smoke or makes his entire arm come off or whatever. As with said dorky magician, those sativa-like effects disappeared as quickly as they appeared. In their place was the feeling that I’d smoked a pure ass indica. It was like some sort of crazy weed switcheroo, and I went from feeling like I had extra energy to feeling like a giant, warm blanket was weighing my body down onto the couch. Given how strong this strain is, that switcheroo could be really good or really sketch, so it would be wise to start slowly – especially if you have plans that don’t involve your couch.
Luckily, I like warm blankets, and I didn’t feel like braving the swirling clouds of ash and smoke just outside my window from the 416 Fire, so I rolled with it. It made for a good, hazy Saturday (in so many ways), and by the time my neighbor wanted to venture outdoors a few hours later, I was feeling quite all right. So if you like weed that can do magic tricks, this one’s for you. Just be careful about that slight of hand, or you’ll end up superglued to your couch before you know it.
