HBO is producing a documenatry series on infamous sex cult NXIVM

It was inevitable that someone would use the rocket-fueled infamy of the NXIVM sex cult case to make a documentary. That someone, it turns out, is HBO.

According to Variety, HBO Documentary Films are in the process of putting together a documentary series on the case, which includes the guilty plea of actress Allison Mack, the former fresh-faced “Smallville” star, who recruited people for NXIVM. Mack, among several others, is accused of keeping a slave and playing a role in DOS, the secret sex cult wing of NXIVM “designed to make [women “slaves”],” she stated.

Others that stand accused include Nancy Salzman, co-founder and president of the organization, her daughter, Lauren Salzman, and Keith Raniere, another co-founder.

Investigators allege that though the group claimed to empower women, it was actually a pyramid scheme, and within DOS, “slaves” were branded with Raniere’s initials on their pelvic regions.

The series is directed by Jehane Noujaim, who once took one of NXIVM’s workshops, and Karim Amer who are interviewing people who once joined the group. The show will take a “deep, nuanced look at experiences of its members, spotlighting their universal desire for personal growth.”
