Montrose funeral home is being sued for allegedly selling body parts of their deceased clients without permission

We’re not even sure what inappropriate joke to make about this one. Apparently a Montrose funeral home and its owner are being sued for the third time for allegedly harvesting and selling body parts without permission. YES. SELLING BODY PARTS. You read that right.

Terri Thorsby, a La Plata County resident, found out via a letter from the FBI the day after Thanksgiving that an investigation into the practices of Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors and a related business, Donor Services, was taking place for allegedly harvesting and then selling off the bodies parts of their families.

Thorsby, who had used the funeral home after both her mother and father died, found out from the FBI that Sunset Mesa and Donor Services allegedly dismembered and sold her mother’s pelvis, both arms from the shoulder down, right knee to her foot, left knee, and her head. Thorsby also believes her father’s body parts were harvested, according to the lawsuit. Pretty horrifying, right? Right.

Both business are owned by Megan M. Hess, who is also named in the lawsuit.

In September 2018, CBS4 Denver reported that several of the alleged victims met together in Montrose to share their grievances.

“I lost my husband June 17 of 2017. I know what body parts I will be getting back. They are in FBI evidence. He was dismembered and sold to an agency in Detroit,” said one victim.

“Her entire body was sold by Sunset Mesa before I even got there to make arrangements for cremation. She gave me fake ashes. At this time the location of her body is unknown,” said another victim.

In Feb. 2018, the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies issued an Order of Summary Suspension against Sunset Mesa, which shut the business down. Sounds like that might be a good move until they get these stolen body part allegations sorted out.
