Reverend Horton Heat to save Durango’s soul

Praise be rock ‘n’ roll because some good ol’ music is coming for Durango.

Reverend Horton Heat, along with Legendary Shack Shakers and The Hooten Hallers, will be hitting the stage at Animas City Theatre Friday night, and the band’s commandments to their flock are simple: rock hard, drive fast, and live true.

“I have a very tight idea of what rock ‘n’ roll is,” Jim Heath, the band’s frontman, told the Cincinnati City Beat blog. “What I want to do is bring back rock ‘n’ roll. We can play Rockabilly, we can play country, we can play our old stuff and whatever is fine. But just straight rock ‘n’ roll — I’m about to start bringing those back. To me, rock ‘n’ roll is that straight-eight … Chuck Berry (with) Johnnie Johnson pounding straight eights on a rock ‘n’ roll piano or Little Richard. I’m influenced a lot in my playing by piano players, Jerry Lee and that straight-eight kind of feel.”

Heath, once referred to as the “godfather of modern rockabilly and psychobilly” by Prick magazine, is committed to the gospel of rock ‘n’ roll revival.

The rock/blues/country band released their latest album, “Whole New Life,” in November 2018 with their new drummer, Arjuna ‘RJ” Contreras, who replaced Scott Churilla, and new pianist, Matt Jordan. The album not only mixes up the band’s lyrics (the lines in this album are significantly more sunny than their past work), but also shows off Heath’s vocal range.

“I’ve been working really hard on my voice,” Heath said in his interview with City Beat. “I should have done it before. I’m singing a little bit higher on this album and I’m showing a little bit more range.”

Tickets to the Durango show are $38-$40. Doors open at 8 p.m.
