Watch out: Global warming and rock climbing on the big screen

by Anya Jaremko-Greenwold

Film screening of “This Changes Everything”“The majority of the human race does not see global warming as a serious threat,” boasts a politician in the trailer for “This Changes Everything.” Thursday night (Oct. 13), the Durango Arts Center is screening the film with a panel discussion preceding it, featuring local experts like Dick White, mayor pro tem/city councilor and environmental advocate; Laurie Dickson, programs director of 4CORE, Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency; and Dr. Rebecca Clausen, associate professor and chairwoman of sociology of Fort Lewis College. Based on the 2014 book “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs The Climate” by journalist Naomi Klein, the film depicts the vast global damage caused by climate change, the foolish resistance of climate change deniers and ideas about how we can combat the looming threat to our planet. Directed by Avi Lewis and shot in nine countries and five continents over four years, the narrative introduces viewers to affected communities like Montana’s Powder River Basin, the Alberta Tar Sands and the coast of South India. Klein’s most exciting proposal: This crisis, though enacted by humans’ greed and capitalism, could actually help in transforming our deteriorating economic system.

REEL ROCK Film TourLove rock climbing and the outdoors? Of course you do, you live in Durango. This is the film festival for you, tonight at Fort Lewis College’s Community Concert Hall. Now in its 10th year, REEL ROCK Film showcases the best in climbing and adventure films, featuring athletes like Tommy Caldwell, Kevin Jorgeson, Alex Honnold, Ashima Shiraishi, Daniel Woods and more. Go witness heart-stopping vertical feats of endurance in gloriously exotic mountain locales on the big screen. But if you’re afraid of heights, be warned – these climbers (men, women, young boys and girls) put themselves in some perilous corners of some steep and unforgiving cliffsides.
