A Denver roaster plans to offer magic mushroom coffee and tea

Black. Sugar-fueled. Just a tiny amount of half-and-half. Chai. We all like our morning beverages one way or another but Denver coffee roaster Strava Craft Coffee is going to start adding a little magic to their brews.

According to Westword, in July, Strava announced plans to offer psilocybin-infused coffee beans and tea in 2020 (at the earliest). With Denver’s recent decriminalization of psychedelic mushrooms, the company is making plans in anticipation of the substance becoming more widely accepted and regulation eventually loosening up.

“Just as cannabis has been misunderstood and controversial for decades, psilocybin from mushrooms has been equally polarizing, yet proponents of both suggest they each can contribute meaningfully to the human experience,” Strava CEO Andrew Aamot said in a statement.

Using “microdoses of psilocybin,” Strava hopes to offer products that will help users cope with anxiety and depression. Research from institutions like John Hopkins University is showing that psilocybin has therapeutic benefits, according to a 2018 article in the medical journal Neuropharmacology.

Strava has a history of being ahead of the grind when it comes to incorporating plants into their products. In 2017, they were one of the first roasters to infuse CBD into their coffee.

“As research is proving, with measured consumption, cannabis and psilocybin can both promote physiological, mental, and spiritual health,” Aamot said.
