San Luis is the oldest, continuously occupied town in Colorado. At the 2010 census, 629 folks lived in the town, which is about 45 minutes southeast of Alamosa. Not only is San Luis the oldest town in Colorado, it holds the oldest, continuously operated business in the state, too, a swell little grocery store called the R&R Market.
The R&R Market is a piece of history. Felix Romero and his wife Claudia have lived above and worked in the grocery for 48 years. Now in their 70s, the couple is looking to retire – so now may be your last opportunity to see the biz still operating.
Why bother going? Well, the R&R was founded in 1857 by Dario Gallegos, a full 19 years before Colorado was a state. Gallegos’ great-great-granddaughter, Lennell Gallegos-Ramos, said it’s important to know that the oldest store in the state was, “founded by Spanish-speaking families who came from Mexico first to New Mexico around 1598 and then, two centuries later to Colorado.”
