Vintage Durango: Potato chips as health food

by Patty Templeton

Eat! All! The! Chips! According to this completely factual advertisement not crossing any ethical-GD-liar lines, Red Seal Potato Chips were a “healthy and delicious” snack. Nothing could be more restorative to your vim and vigor than flakes of fried potato covered in salt. Oh, 1950s advertising.

Though you can try to convince yourself that potatoes are excellent for bone health and B6, their oil and crunch is more bad than good. Chips are a low-nutrient, high-calorie food.

The cartoon family in this ad died with clogged arteries and high blood pressure after a likely diet of potato chip omelets, casseroles topped in crisps, and potato chip pie for dessert.
