Prohibition is killing it with these new strains. Last week we reviewed Bay Dream, a strain that’s brand new to the dispensary. And THIS week, we got to review Billy D, a strain that’s new to this universe (or the rec side of the dispensary, anyway). We’re lucky, lucky writers.
So, about Billy D. This strain is a sativa hybrid, and is a cross between the famed Sour Diesel and Jedi Kush, an indica created from a cross Death Star and SFV OG Kush. In case you were wondering, those are two very good strains. Billy D’s buds are a dark, dense emerald green, with just the slightest hint of orange woven in. It clocks in at 19.2 percent THC, and while that’s a pretty darn high THC content, it’s not up there with the Bruce Banners or Chemdawgs of the world.
Not that it isn’t strong as hell, mind you. I ground up just enough to load a bowl (smoking table for one, please) and it was MORE than enough to do the trick. I was noticeably stoned about three hits in. I know this because it was kinda late at night when I smoked, and I made the mistake of hopping up all willy-nilly to shut off the kitchen light. As soon as I stood up, this strain hit me right in the brain before I even knew what was happening. My head felt like a very inflated balloon. A fun balloon, mind you, but still a balloon.
I spent the next hour or so on the couch feeling like my head was full of helium, but it was odd, because normally that feeling leads to the whole deep-in-the-recesses-of-my-own-brain stoned. You know what I’m talking about – the kind of head trip where you’re in your own world, devoid of any desire to socialize, mostly because your lips won’t cooperate. But that’s not what happened with ol’ Billy D. The cerebral effects were there, but it was still a clear-headed high, and there was just enough of a body high to be interesting without being overwhelming. My arms and legs were feeling it, but nothing went numb. Twas quite a surprise.
But then again, I was surprised at a few of Billy D’s qualities. I really expected, given the strain’s genetics, that this bud would smell overwhelmingly like skunk and diesel fuel. Perhaps I am becoming immune to the stench of skunky gas, but it wasn’t as obvious as I’d expected. The strain smells more clean and earthy than skunky, which is cool by me.
I was also surprised that the smoke from this strain was so heavy – perhaps from the Jedi Kush genetics – that it made me cough like I was back in high school. It was to the point where I felt it necessary to check my pipe for rogue residue or ash. That was not the problem. The problem was my janky throat. Thank god I was alone or I would have been ashamed.
Choking aside, this was a baller strain. I was definitely high, but was also clear-headed, and once I started coming down, I passed right the hell out where I was sitting and did not wake up until 6:45 a.m. the next morning. Prohibition knocked it – and me – out of the park with this one.
